Moringa Pruning and Harvest: Keep Your Tree Short and Bushy

How and when to prune a moringa (murungai) tree so it stays short, bushy and easy to harvest, plus how to reuse cuttings and avoid common pruning mistakes.

Quick answer: Prune a moringa tree by cutting or pinching the main stem when it reaches about 3 feet, then trim side branches when they grow around 2 feet long. After a heavy harvest, cut the tree back to a manageable height. Use clean, sharp shears, cut at a slight angle just above a node, and prune in dry weather.

Moringa (murungai) grows astonishingly fast. Without pruning it shoots up into a tall, thin tree with leaves and pods out of reach, and soft branches that snap in wind. A few well-timed cuts turn it into a bushy tree you can harvest from a stool, or even from the ground.

Why Prune Moringa?

  • More branches, more leaves: each cut makes the tree send out side shoots, which gives a fuller canopy.
  • Easy harvest: a tree you can reach saves ladders and risky terrace climbs.
  • Stronger structure: shorter, thicker branches handle wind better, important on rooftops.
  • Healthier plant: opening up crowded growth improves airflow and reduces pest hiding spots.

When to Prune

  1. First topping: when the young plant is about 3 feet (roughly 1 metre) tall.
  2. Second shaping: when the new side branches reach about 2 feet.
  3. After a big leaf harvest: trim back to keep the height reachable.
  4. Season: choose dry, mild weather. Avoid pruning heavily in the middle of the monsoon, when wet cuts can invite rot.

Step by Step: How to Prune

  1. Sanitise your shears with a wipe of diluted soap water or alcohol, especially if you have trimmed a sick plant.
  2. Find a node (the bump where a leaf stalk meets the stem) at the height you want.
  3. Cut just above it at a slight angle so water runs off the cut.
  4. Take out crossing or weak branches so each remaining branch has space.
  5. Remove only part of the leaves in one go; leave plenty of foliage so the tree can keep growing.

The Hard Prune (Cut Back)

If a tree has grown tall and leggy, you can cut the whole trunk back to about 3 feet. Do this in dry, warm weather, make a clean slanting cut, and give the tree a good watering and a little compost afterwards. New shoots should appear from below the cut within a few weeks. Skip this for very young or weak trees.

Reuse Your Cuttings

Thick, healthy branches about 2 to 4 cm wide can be cut into pieces of about 1 metre and planted deep in a pot or garden soil. Let the cut ends dry for a day, plant about a third of the length in the soil, and keep the soil only lightly moist until new leaves appear. Cuttings are an easy way to share trees with friends. After-Pruning Care

Common Pruning Mistakes

  • Waiting until the tree is 6 to 8 feet tall before the first cut.
  • Using blunt or dirty shears that crush the stem.
  • Cutting far below a node, leaving a long dead stub.
  • Removing nearly all leaves at once.
  • Pruning right before heavy rain.
