Money Plant in Water vs Soil: Which Grows Better?

Quick answer: A money plant (pothos) grows well in both water and soil. Water is easiest for starting cuttings and needs fresh water every one to two weeks; soil usually gives bigger, fuller plants with less upkeep once rooted. A good approach is to root cuttings in water, then move them to soil when the roots are about 4 to 6 inches long.

Money plant is the most popular house plant in Indian homes, and the most common question about it is: water or soil? Both work. Here is how each method differs, and how to pick the right one for your space.

How to Grow Money Plant in Water

  1. Cut a stem with at least two or three nodes (the small bumps where leaves join). Roots grow from the nodes.
  2. Remove the lowest leaf so no leaf sits underwater and rots.
  3. Place the cutting in a clean glass bottle or jar with the nodes submerged.
  4. Set it in bright indirect light and change the water every one to two weeks.
  5. Rinse the roots and bottle gently if you see green algae or slime.

Roots usually appear within a couple of weeks in warm weather. If you keep the plant in water long term, add a small amount of diluted liquid plant food now and then, since plain water has no nutrients.

How to Grow Money Plant in Soil

  1. Use a pot with drainage holes and a light potting mix. Our potting mix guide shows a simple recipe.
  2. Plant a rooted cutting (or an unrooted one with a node buried) and press the soil gently.
  3. Water once, let it drain, and keep the soil lightly moist for the first few weeks.
  4. Afterwards, water only when the top inch is dry.

Light and Placement

Money plant does best in bright indirect light. It survives dimmer rooms but grows leggy with smaller leaves. Avoid long hours of direct afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves. For more plants that suit these spots, see our list of best indoor plants for Indian homes.

Make It Bushy: Prune Above a Node

Long, bare stems? Cut just above a node. New shoots will form from that point, and the trimmed pieces can be rooted as new plants. A trim every month or two in the growing season keeps the plant full. Our pruning guide explains clean-cut basics.

Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves: most often overwatering, or old lower leaves ageing. See why indoor plant leaves turn yellow.
  • Brown leaf tips: dry air, direct AC airflow, or salt build-up.
  • Slimy water: change water more often and rinse the roots and container.
  • Small leaves and long gaps: too little light, or the plant is hungry. Move it brighter and feed lightly.

Money plant leaves can upset the stomach if chewed, so keep it out of reach of pets and small children. For compact spaces, our free Balcony Gardening Guide eBook has more ideas.
