Quick answer: Give a snake plant bright to low indirect light, water it only when the soil is completely dry (roughly every 10 to 21 days depending on season), plant it in a gritty, fast-draining mix in a pot with drainage holes, and repot only when roots crowd the pot, about every two to three years. Mushy leaves at the base almost always mean too much water.
The snake plant is one of the toughest house plants you can own. It survives dim rooms, skipped waterings and warm Chennai summers. But it has one weakness: wet feet. Here is how to keep it healthy for years.
Light: Flexible, But Brighter Grows Faster
Snake plants tolerate low light, but they grow slowly and may lose bold patterns there. For steady growth, place yours in bright indirect light, such as a few feet from an east or north-facing window. Avoid harsh afternoon sun through glass, which can bleach or scorch the leaves.
Watering: The Rule That Matters Most
Push a finger or a wooden skewer deep into the pot. If any dampness remains, wait. Water thoroughly only when the whole pot is dry, then let the excess drain out. In a hot Chennai summer that may be every 10 to 14 days; in the monsoon or in an air-conditioned room it can stretch to three weeks or more. When in doubt, wait another few days.
Soil and Pot
Use a light, gritty mix: about two parts potting mix to one part coarse sand or perlite. Choose a pot with a drainage hole; terracotta helps the soil dry faster. Our potting mix guide explains how to build a well-draining mix at home.

Feeding
Snake plants need very little. A light feed once a month in the growing season is plenty. A small spoonful of vermicompost worked into the top soil works well — see how to make vermicompost at home. Skip feeding in the cooler months.
How and When to Repot
- Repot when roots circle the pot, push up through the drainage hole, or the pot bulges. Early in the warm season is a good time.
- Water lightly a day before so the root ball slides out easily.
- Choose a pot only one size larger. Oversized pots hold extra water and invite rot.
- Shake off old soil, trim any black or mushy roots, and set the plant at the same depth as before.
- Fill with fresh mix, press gently and wait a few days before the first watering.

Making More Snake Plants
Division is the easiest method: when repotting, pull apart clumps that already have roots and pot them separately. Leaf cuttings also work: cut a healthy leaf into 3 to 4 inch sections, let the cut ends dry for a day, and plant them upright in damp sand or mix. Roots and new shoots take weeks to appear. Note that variegated types often lose their stripes when grown from leaf cuttings, so divide those instead.
Common Problems
- Soft, mushy base or yellowing leaves: overwatering or poor drainage. Remove the plant, cut away rotten parts and repot in dry, gritty mix. More in our guide to yellow indoor plant leaves.
- Wrinkled, curling leaves: the plant is too dry. Water deeply and check that water is actually soaking in.
- Brown tips: salt build-up, very dry air or direct AC airflow. Flush the soil and move the plant.
- White cottony spots: mealybugs. Wipe with a cloth dipped in diluted neem solution — see our neem oil spray guide.
